: Classic Spaghetti Bolognese

 

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 carrot, finely diced
  • 1 celery stalk, finely diced
  • 1 can (14 oz/400g) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup (240ml) beef broth
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) red wine (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 lb (450g) spaghetti
  • Grated Parmesan cheese for serving
  • Fresh basil or parsley for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Vegetables:

    • Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
    • Add chopped onions, minced garlic, diced carrots, and diced celery.
    • Sauté until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.
  2. Brown the Ground Beef:

    • Add the ground beef to the pot, breaking it up with a spoon.
    • Cook until the beef is browned and cooked through.
  3. Add Tomato Base:

    • Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 2 minutes.
    • Pour in the crushed tomatoes, beef broth, and red wine (if using).
    • Add dried oregano, basil, thyme, salt, and pepper.
    • Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  4. Simmer:

    • Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Stir occasionally.
  5. Cook the Spaghetti:

    • While the sauce is simmering, cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  6. Final Touch:

    • Taste the Bolognese sauce and adjust seasoning if needed.
    • Serve the sauce over the cooked spaghetti.
  7. Serve:

    • Garnish with freshly grated Parmesan cheese and chopped basil or parsley.
