Homemade Apple Pie
Ingredients:
For the Pie Crust:
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsalted butter (cold and cut into cubes)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 6-8 tablespoons ice water
For the Filling:
- 6 cups of thinly sliced apples (a mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp works well)
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- A pinch of salt
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (cut into small pieces)
Instructions:
Prepare the Pie Crust:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar. Add the cold, cubed butter. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, and mix until the dough comes together. Divide the dough into two equal portions, shape each into a flat disc, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
Prepare the Filling:
- In a separate bowl, mix the sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and lemon juice until the apples are well coated. Let the mixture sit for around 15-20 minutes.
Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
Roll Out the Dough:
- On a floured surface, roll out one disc of the chilled dough to fit a 9-inch pie dish. Carefully transfer the dough to the dish.
Assemble the Pie:
- Fill the pie shell with the prepared apple mixture. Dot the top of the apples with small pieces of butter.
- Roll out the second disc of dough to cover the pie. You can create a lattice pattern or simply cover the pie with the whole sheet, cutting a few slits for ventilation.
Bake:
- Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 15 minutes. Then reduce the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for an additional 40-45 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
Cool and Serve:
